A NON-GEO Satellite operation (Sirius) means the satellite does not appear to stay in one place in the sky and actually moves very slowly across the sky with longitude central United States of 96.0 West.
The Sirius Radiosat 1 through 3 satellites are not in geo-stationary orbit but in large ellipitical orbits. This type of orbit puts the sats apogee at higher altitudes than the geosats, which must reside directly above the equator and from North American are visible towards the south/west.
The Sirius satellite orbits are radically tilted and they travel at the same 17,500 miles per hour, their paths take them as close as 15,700 miles over the far-side of the earth to as much as 28,000 miles high when the satellites are above the USA..
The Sirius Radiosat Satellite Radio spacecraft built by Space Systems/LORAL SS/L-3000 are three-axis stabilized, direct broadcast, Digital Audio Radio Service designed to operate in the X- and S-frequency bands.
Your Sirius radio receiver will "listen" for the signal on the satellite frequencies 2322.29 mhz or 2330.20 mhz. If it is not able to receive them, it will automatically switch to terrestrial mode and listen for the signal from a terrestrial repeater frequency at 2326.25 mhz. This is a separate space satellite that receives its uplink signals on 14 ghz and downlinks to the terrestrial repeaters on 12 ghz it appears also to be doing some streaming video and internet hosting experiments to. With a standard scanner you might hear some buzzing around these frequency, but more likely it would sound like a clear channel because its encryted wideband data.
TIPS
Sirius Radio installed? You then will be able to receive the free Sirius weather channel (184) that provides a national overview of the weather anywhere, also interstate road conditions, five day forecast updates, amber alerts, evacuation routes, what shelters are open, disaster recovery planning. This is the only free channel that works until you activate the unit.Tune to channel 184 write down your units ID/ESN number from the display you will need it to register. It would be a good ideal to take the sirius radio with you and monitor the satellite signal strengths in the locations you'll be using the radio, 2-3 bars is a weak signal strength..If your not happy with the sirius reception just take back the radio back before registering ..Once you register with sirius you can't cancel the credit card subscription online.
FREE: Satellite Sirius radio at your home or car with a good FM antenna. The Stiletto will be able to play live SIRIUS broadcasts in the Car Dock, in the Home Dock and in the Portable Mode, pick up SIRIUS in WiFi zones. This will expand the coverage of listening to many buildings.Doesn't come with a car kit or a home kit, they must be purchased separately: Car Kit, Home Kit around $70.00 usd each.
ANTENNA MODS
There will be interference. Even the smallest obstruction often seems to block satellite reception, and occasionally the signal will completely disappear for no reason. The reception returns after a few seconds or when the obstruction is passed.
You can rigged up a cantenna with an old coffee can to get some gain on the antenna or make you a corner reflector out of cardboard and warp it in tin foil and place the radio-antenna in front that will help with the weak spots around your home..NOTE...the SIRIUS satellite is always moving,
You won't usually have to worry about pointing your satellite antenna as it will automatically aquire the satellite lock as long as you have a clear view of the south/west sky from the east coast USA.
TRICKS.. USE WHAT YOU ALREADY HAVE.
Use your "Dish" network satellite receiver for home Sirius listening. All channels are 192 kbps MPEG2 audio and Sirius sounds a lot better on satellite Dish than it does on a real Sirius radio. The Dish has more bandspace than the 12MHz of spectrum space for Sirius and is able to offer good 192kbits/sec streams. Your real Sirius radio's 150 channels are squeezed into a total datastream of 4.5m bitrate per second this not much for each channel, but you really can't tell the rate as they use S-plex - Variable bit rate and others.
